It’s so nice to see (or hear) a true artist exploring her sound (and herself) without all the self-indulgent pomp and circumstance. Here is a quietly beautiful track from Me’Shell NdegéOcello off of her new album called Weather. The track is called Dirty World. I never really noticed just how beautiful her voice was.

I am such a nerd. I recently heard of BADBADNOTGOOD through the work that they’ve been doing with Odd Future (The Odd Future Sessions). Come to find out they have an album out called BBNG. It’s mostly smooth jazz covers of fairly well known songs by artists like Nas, Gang Starr, ODB, etc. I heard a reviewer say that while it is frequently the case that Jazz has influenced hip hop, this album is one of the rare occasions that the direction of influence goes the other way. I like that. And while there are plenty of terrible live versions of hip hop songs out there (if you’re anything like me then the thought of yet another effort makes you cringe) the Canadian Jazz trio of BADBADNOTGOOD demonstrate some serious talent and creativity with their reinterpretations of these songs.

So why am I a nerd? The song that really resonated with me — the one that’s been stuck in my head for the past week or so — is the third part of track eleven. The track is called Title Theme / Saria’s Song / Song Of Storms. If you get what they’re referring to already then you’re more of a nerd than I. I like all three parts, but the third part I found really catchy. Turns out these songs are covers of melodies from the Zelda series. The part that I’m posting, Song of Storms, is from Ocarina of Time. Apparently that’s why it resonated with me. I’ve heard it before!! I even commented to a friend yesterday, that I thought it sounded like a song from a video game or something. Jeez. It’s not really funky or dancey but I like it and I posted it, dammit.

Here is one by Teams that’s been out for a while called Based Love. I’ve posted about him before because of a collaboration he did with Star Slinger. I wasn’t sure how much of that album was Slinger and how much was Teams. After hearing more of Teams work I could care less. This song is crazy good.

Sorry for the late post. I try to get these out when I can but, amongst other issues, I didn’t have internet access yesterday.

Tyskerhar put out a new album recently. I’ve posted about them before. Very much an acquired taste, but I can’t help but feel that there is a high level of kitsch or maybe camp in their music that always tickles my fancy (and my fancy LOVES being tickled). Although, I’m still not sure it’s completely intentional (not that it matters for me). Tyskerhar consists of Miss Mao Dou Mao (a Bejing transplant currently living in Berlin) on vocals and Seek Lag Lazer as the DJ. Dou sings in English and her voice is kind of sweet and innocent (even when she’s cursing like a sailor) with a fairly heavy accent. I’m reminded of Cibo Matto often when I listen to her. I also love her quirky, geeky lyrics. This is from a song called Jedi on the album: You’re not Rambo. Oh. Oh./You’re not fucking Steve McQueen./You’re not razor (although, I’m not sure if she meant to say laser). Oh. Oh./It’s not a part of movie scene.

The song I’ve posted is called Pet Godzilla. I think it’s a break up song where (let’s see if I get this straight) Dou describes her ex as Godzilla and her heart is like a city filled with apartment buildings and run by some government. Put the two together and, well, we all know the story. Boy meets girl, they fall in love, things don’t work out, boy turns into to a gigantic radioactive lizard/dino and razes the girl’s fragile little universe with his atomic breath. So tragic. And if that isn’t what the song is about, well, it should be.

Check out the EP if you’re interested. I think it’s their best yet. They really show some range. Also, it’s available for a free download.

I am loving this song right now. LOVING! It’s by a Brooklyn duo that are working under the moniker GAMES, but also release music under the name of Ford & Lopatin (you may have heard their song Emergency Room that got some attention this summer). They, Daniel Lopatin and Joel Ford, have an album on iTunes (called Channel Pressure) using the Ford & Lopatin title and have released two EPs using GAMES. This song, No Disguise, is a GAMES release. I’m not sure if picking band names that make Googling impossible is a new trend but here’s to hoping that they stick with Ford & Lopatin. Either way, the music they are releasing is pretty fresh. It seems to have this 80’s/80’s R&B vibe that I am really feeling. That is especially true for this song. Good stuff.

Haven’t posted any Star Slinger in a while. Guess it’s a good time too, seeing as he just released his first offical single called Dumbin and featuring Reggie B. It’s available for a free download here.

This song never fails to make me smile. Cheech and Chong doing a parody of Love Jones by Brighter Side of Darkness. It’s called Basketball Jones featuring Tyrone Shoelaces and is from the album Los Cochinos.

Ok, I think that most of the traveling I’ve been doing for the past 2 months is over. I’ll try to be better about posting on Friday. To prove that I’m rededicating myself I have something special for today. Or, at least I think it’s special.

Remember Elmatic? Outstanding tribute to Nas’s Illmatic by the MC Elzhi? If so, then you probably remember hearing about Will Sessions, the band that reinterpreted the beats from Illmatic and played live versions for Elmatic. I am going to argue that the contributions by Will Sessions, no disrespect to Elzhi, made that album. I don’t think there are many who would disagree.

Sessions on Elmatic was the first time that I had heard them. I looked, at that time, to find some other work of theirs but I couldn’t find much (anything really). I looked again recently, thinking that surely by this time some other work of theirs would have materialized, and sure enough it had. Leaks is a “mixtape” of theirs that was released sometime ago. I have mixtape in quotes because I suppose it’s a mixtape of sorts, but really it’s just the band jamming out.

The first half consists of some live hip hop beats that they’ve done (one can easily hear the influence of well known Detroit producers in their sound). After the first 4 songs, however, they switch to some excellent jazz instrumentation and heady jazz funk. Mostly they seemed to be snippets of full sets (hence the album title?), but still worth checking out. Naturally, it being Funky Friday and all, I’ve chosen a song from the second half of the album. This one is called You Got it All. Enjoy.

I’ve been neglecting my Friday posts for a while, partly due to travel and partly due to laziness. That should change once the semester starts (not really). This is a song by Phantogram called As Far As I Can See. It’s from their debut album called Eyelid Movies (2009). I saw Phantogram at Lolla and they were pretty ill. They said to expect a new album from them in Sept., so that’s cool. I really like their electro-experimental sound. Reminds me a bit of Blonde Redhead.

Remember way back when people were releasing all of these horrible Cafe Chill compilation albums filled with mediocre electro-jazz (as if there is any other kind). Well (mayhap you saw this coming) I was a fan of one such series; the Saint Germain des pres Cafe series to be exact. I have to admit though, regardless of how you feel about that particular genre or those types of albums there were actually some great songs in this series.

Seriously.

Ok, whatever. Here is one of my favs from Volume 8. It’s called I Am A Manchild and is by Uptown Fun Empire. Oh, the other things about this album series is that I never really could find a lot of info about the artists that were featured on them. Same is true for Uptown Fun Empire. Still, I think this song is beast.
